Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learned that art is a great instrument to engage in political activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful through her mother. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get attracted to the field of production for television journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
